Colaborando Juntos presents . . .

Substance Abuse & Prevention Strategies for Latino Consumers  Friday October 8th, 2010 9:30am*-12pm

Henrico Area Mental Health and Developmental Services

Conference Room C

10299 Woodman Rd

Glen Allen, VA 23060

Although there is no simple way to describe the patterns of drug useamong Hispanics, certain patterns have been identified: *       Drug use rates among Hispanics 12-17 years old are similar torates among non-Hispanic White counterparts*       Hispanic 8th grade students' use came out highest compared toblacks and whites on nearly all classes of drugs (amphetamines being themajor exception).*       The higher rates of illicit drug use among younger Hispanicstudents is a serious public health problem because younger age ofinitiation has been associated with greater risk of serious drug abuserelated problems and addiction.*       Older Hispanics report lower drug use rates than older non-Hispanic Whites.*       U.S.-born Hispanics report higher rates of drug use, abuse, anddependence than Hispanics born outside the U.S. However, research has shown that there are many factors that impactprevention and treatment of substance abuse in the Latino community.Among them are the family context, which has been found to be the mostimportant factor in the development of adolescent drug use. In additionto the family context, the school context is an area of concern forHispanic adolescents because their high rate of school drop-out places them at greater risk for drug use. During this session we will discuss how factors in prevention andtreatment may be similar and different in the Latino community asopposed to the wider community. We will also explore the following

questions:

 *       What do we know about strategies that work to engage Hispanicclients into treatment?*       What are some efficacious preventive interventions for Hispanicadolescents

*       What are some of the current gaps in research among Hispanics?

*  We will have light refreshments from 9:30-10:00am

**  Colaborando Juntos workshops are FREE and OPEN to anyone interestedin skill building for service providers.  Service providers from SocialServices, Public Health, Mental Health, Developmental Services, students, and private sector employees are welcome to attend.
